The Prevx Corporation
Prevx Limited is a privately held company headquartered in Derby, England. The company has 5 years experience in developing Host Intrusion Prevention software (HIPS).
In February, 2004, Prevx launched the world’s first consumer HIPS product, Prevx Home, with a user base of c.1Million users. A key characteristic of Prevx Home was its central reporting feature. Over the 20 months since Prevx Home was launched more than 1Billion HIPS events have been centrally recorded and analyzed. As a direct result of the intelligence gathered the company has evolved a clean sheet design for a new generation of threat detection system and end-point security solutions. This development, known as Prevx 1, began beta trials on July 16th, 2005. The technology is the subject of a significant patent application filed on July 9th.
PREVX 1 - INTELLIGENCE, THREAT DETECTION AND PC SECURITY
Prevx 1 utilizes a powerful end-point security agent to deliver two critical security functions. First, Prevx 1 provides centralised threat detection using intelligence, automatically gathered defining the existence, propagation, and behaviour of new and evolving software in use within its user base. Second, Prevx 1 combines a comprehensive set of new and significantly improved technologies to deliver a quantum step in PC security for both corporate and consumer, PC and Server environments.
The beta trials of Prevx 1 have exceeded all expectations. With a test user base of just 100,000 users Prevx 1 has proven its ability to detect, track and determine new and evolving malware more accurately, faster and more reliably than conventional honey-pot and bench testing methodologies. The company can now track and detect the spread of new, established and evolved software in real time. This has enabled the Company to build automated procedures to identify and neutralize new and evolving threats, providing much stronger and more comprehensive security than conventional signature and/or HIPS based solutions.
As a result the Prevx 1 Agent offers unparalleled performance in zero-day and legacy malware protection as well as ultra-quiet operation.

COMMUNITY INTRUSION PREVENTION SYSTEM (CIPS)
Prevx paved the way for a new genre in community intrusion technology with its Prevx Home initiative. CIPS is inherently much stronger, flexible and more manageable than HIPS and virtually eliminates the issues of false positives and noise. Each Prevx 1 agent forms part of a powerful, global community of systems detecting and feeding information about the emergence, behaviour and propagation of new software and malware, in real time, across the web to a centralised database. This database is rapidly establishing itself as the World’s most powerful source of information defining the existence, proliferation and activity of both benign and malicious software.
The database tracks and analyses the real-time behaviour and propagation of every program executed by the community.
A sophisticated multi-level caching architecture ensures that system resources are concentrated on analysing new and un-determined software. The database automatically detects a vast array of new and evolving malware using real time and batch heuristics based on Prevx’ four axes of evil:

Using these techniques the database is automatically identifying and neutralising more than 400 new malware elements per day. In addition, a powerful set of sophisticated analytics, tracking, reporting and research systems are enabling a team of just 2 researchers to identify and neutralise a further 1,000 new malware elements each day.
Based on publicly available metrics and data gathered by Prevx 1 the company’s automatic determination systems have been able to out-perform all leading vendor’s ability to detect and neutralise new malware. It is envisaged that the system will become even more powerful and faster at detecting and neutralising new malware as the user base grows significantly beyond its 100,000 user beta trial.
The database currently provides Prevx 1 users with real-time access to approximately 10 million dynamically built software profiles including definitions of more than 220,000 malware elements.
It also enables corporate users to monitor software usage, malware infections and attempted infections, throughout their installed base. Larger corporates can choose to have hosted services utilising web based access to view and monitor their installed base or in-house intranet based services using a distributed version of the Prevx analytic and control applications.
AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION, DETERMINATION AND SIGNATURE GENERATION
The CIPS applications also monitor, track and compare Prevx 1’s performance in real time against almost 1,000 security products, including all leading brands in use across the community. This enables Prevx to compare the product’s performance directly with the competition. To date this analysis has consistently shown that Prevx 1’s protection, real time signature generation and deployment is offering significantly faster and more comprehensive protection than all competitors’ products.
The depth of behavioural data gathered by Prevx 1 agents is so extensive that accurate identification and determination of both benign and malicious software can be made confidently without the need for bench testing. However, should the need arise Prevx 1 incorporates an automated facility to gather copies of miscellaneous software from client systems. To date, all malware determinations have been based exclusively on behavioural data captured by Prevx 1 agents.
SHORT TERM ROAD MAP
Prevx is focused on further developing and extending the capabilities of Prevx 1. Following successful stress tests to prove scalability and performance in supporting vast numbers of agents the next release of the end-point agent will offer a range of operating modes to cater for a broader base of users from those looking for an easy to use fit and forget security product to those wanting a more visible HIPS oriented interface. This forthcoming release will also incorporate a unique feature which dynamically detects and protects against malicious web sites and content.
CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT
Recent meetings with potential partners and prominent Analysts have confirmed Prevx 1 and its CIPS application represent a quantum leap over current technologies. Its range of automated and semi-automated malware research capabilities have the potential to massively reduce cost and increase speed of response for major corporates, ISPs, PC Manufacturers and PC Security Vendors. Prevx 1 also addresses the major concerns that Analysts and CIOs have with regard to conventional signature technologies and the spiralling evolution and cost of malware and spyware protection and clean up.
